Speech and Language Services

Service Delivery Models

At MMS, students receive speech and language services on a 6 day cycle (A thru F). Your student's frequency/duration is listed in his/her IEP, and is determined based upon his/her individual needs (e.g., 1 x per 6 day cycle, small group, for 46 minutes).

Individual: Student receives services individually, 1:1 with the speech language specialist, typically pull-out style.

Group: Student receives services in a small group setting (typically pull-out style) with no more than four other students (maximum group size is five students as stipulated in NJ State Administrative Code).

Integrated: Student receives support from the speech language specialist within the classroom setting (typically within Literacy or Written Expression, but support can be provided in any setting). The speech language specialist and classroom teacher work collaboratively to assist students with the carryover/generalization of previously learned skills, within the students' natural environment: the classroom. Up to five students can be serviced within an integrated session.

Consultation: The consultation model typically follows one, or both, or the following formats:

  1. The student meets with the speech language specialist 1:1 (frequency and duration to be determined based upon need with the team) to review goals and objectives and discuss progress of generalization of skills within the school/classroom setting. This model may be recommended prior to a student's anticipated discharge from speech and language services.
  2. The speech language specialist meets with the student's classroom teacher(s) (frequency and duration to be determined based upon need with the team) to review student progress and generalization of skills, as well as to provide ongoing strategies for any continued areas of weakness.
