Health

  • Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional and social well-being.
  • It is important to keep all three components of health balanced because they are all equally important
  • A state of well-being over a long period of time, when the parts of the health triangle is balanced is wellness.
  • You can develop good mental/emotional health by learning to think positively and to express your feelings in healthy ways

 

Personal Health

  • To take care of your eyes you should rest them, read in a well-lit room and not sit to close to the TV or computer to prevent eyestrain
  • It is important that you do not rub your eyes if they itch or hurt because you could have allergies or an infection
  • Warming up and stretching help to loosen muscles and prevent injury
  • It is important to stay well hydrated especially when participating in physical activity
  • Since you only see ¼ of your actual tooth it is important to make sure that you practice good dental hygiene such as; flossing, brushing and getting a dental check up.
  • Sunscreen is a lotion that helps to filter out the harmful rays of the sun known as UV rays.
  • The inner layer of skin that is thicker is called the dermis and the outer layer of skin is called the epidermis.
  • When skin dies off and flakes off from the scalp is dandruff.
  • Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that grows on teeth and if not removed can lead to tooth decay.

 

Body Systems

  • The basic building block of life is called a cell (ex. Nerve cell)
  • Tissues are groups of similar cells that do the same kind of work (ex. Nerve tissue)
  • Structures made up of different types of tissues that all work together are organs (ex. The heart: muscle tissue, nerve tissue and blood tissue)
  • Cell ? tissues ? organs ? body systems ? body
  • The circulatory system is responsible for bringing in food and oxygen to cells and removing waste (the transportation system)
  • The circulatory system and respiratory system work together to bring in more oxygen when an athlete is performing
  • The muscular and skeletal systems work together to allow the body to move.

 

Tobacco

  • When smoking carbon monoxide prevents red blood cells from carrying a full load of oxygen
  • Tobacco can lead to bad breath, stained teeth and mouth and throat cancer.
  • Tobacco was used in more than ¾ of movies intended for young viewers.
  • The media often portrays tobacco use as cool and glamorous and often targets teens.
  • Nicotine in tobacco speeds up the heartbeat and affects the central nervous system and narrows blood vessels to and from the heart.
  • Tar is a thick, oily, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns and it deposits on the lining of the lungs that can lead to breathing problems and lung disease.  
  • With just one puff (the first time someone uses it) releases harmful chemicals into the mouth, throat and lungs and can cause feelings of dizziness to the smoker and anyone around them.   
  • Second hand smoke is a mixture of the smoke that is given off by the burning end of tobacco products and the smoke exhaled by smokers.
  • When saying no it is important to have good refusal skills such as; 1) say no in an assertive style, speak in a firm voice and look at the people you are talking to.

 

Consumerism

  • A consumer is someone who buys products or services
  • As a consumer the cost of the product, likes and dislikes and advertising will influence their decision.
  • Labels on products will give you information lots of information such as how to use the product, ingredients and warnings.
  • A generic brand cost less because it is like name-brand products but sold in plain packages.
  • Stores that offer lower prices on products or services are discount stores.
  • Fraud is when someone deliberately tries to trick the consumers into buying products or services.
  • Some consumers will use coupons to reduce the price of a product at the checkout counter,
  • Unit price is how much something cost per unit of weight or volume.
