EXTRACURRICULAR CLUBS

 

ART SCENERY - Grades 7-8 - During meetings, students will work together to create additional sets and props for the school musical. Construction, painting, and scenery are some of the activities involved. Additionally, applications will be available for 8th grade students to assist with handing out playbills, collecting tickets and ushering attendees to their seats on the night of the performances. The club will run from late September to February. Meeting times are from 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm. Pick-up will be in the back parking lot nearest to the auditorium. Sept. 20; Oct. 4, 11, 25; Nov. 1, 15, 29; Dec. 13, 20; Jan. 3, 17, 31; Feb. 14, 21, 28.

CHESS CLUB - Open to players of all abilities, especially those interested in learning how to play the iconic game of chess! Improve focus, memory, and strategic thinking in a low-pressure environment. Learn strategies & tactics and gain confidence in the game - fun comes first! Chess club will meet on the following Wednesdays from 2:20-3:20: September 20, 27; October 4, 11, 18, 25; November 1, 8, 15, 29; December 13, 20; January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; February 7, 14, 21. All meetings will be held in Room 231.

CRAFT CLUB - Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: October 5, 12, 19, 26; November 2,16, 30; December 14, 21; January 4, 11, 18, 25; February 1, 8, 15.  Meeting times are from 2:15- 3:45 pm.  All students are eligible to join.  Students will have the opportunity to use their imagination to create fun projects and crafts.  Students will learn creative ways to reuse and recycle materials. Club members will gain the opportunity to make new friends with common interests.

COMPUTER CLUB - Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: September 20;  October 4, 18 and 25; November 1, 15 and 29; December 13 and 20; January 3, 17 and 31; February 7, 21 and 28; March 6, 13 and 27.  Meeting times are from  2:20-3:45 pm.  The Computer Club enables students of all grade levels to explore the computer in an open setting. Students will use a variety of software to engage in diverse activities such as desktop publishing, web-page design, gaming and the exploration of coding software. Additionally, it is also an open lab for students to conduct research, and complete  homework/projects.  Please be aware that we will be using the Internet.

DEBATE CLUB - Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: September 21; October 5, 12; November 2, 16; December 14, 21; January 4, 11; February 1, 8; March  7, 14; April 11, 18; May 2, 9; June 6. Meeting times are from 2:30­-3:45 pm. This club is open to students of all grade levels who are enthusiastic and looking to improve their speaking and language arts skills while having fun. Debaters will work as a team to make and support assertions, conduct research to gather effective evidence, analyze and critique arguments, and conduct speeches. If you are outspoken, like to argue, or are looking to increase argumentative skills, this is the club for you!

DIGITAL ART CLUB - Scheduled meetings for the 2023-4 school year are as follows: September 19; October 3, 17; November 14, 28; December 5, 19; January 9, 16, 30; February 6, 20; March 5, 19, 26; April 8, 29; May 7. Potential make-up meetings: May 14 and 21st, if needed.  Meetings are 2:20-3:45pm in Room 132, unless otherwise announced.  In the digital art club, students will be invited to learn ways to create engaging and fun art using digital platforms, including having access to Adobe Creative Suites.  Students will have opportunities to design school posters and promotional media while learning about potential opportunities and careers  in digital art and design.

FITNESS CLUB - Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: September 19, 20, 21, 26, 28; October 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 24, 25, 26, 31; November 1, 2. Meeting times are from 2:30-4:00pm. Students who join the fitness club will enjoy working out with friends and achieving their fitness goals. Activities will vary based on student interest. Examples are fitness stations, high cardio activities, and team/individual based games. This club will meet after school in the main gym.  Sports physicals are required.

HEALTHY FUTURES CLUB - This brand new club is open to all students who are interested in learning about basic first aid, life-threatening emergencies, and how to help someone in the event of an emergency. This club will be a fun, hands-on experience and will include a community service project to be run by the students to help our local community. Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: October: 2, 16, 23; November: 6, December 4, 18; January 8, 22; February 5, 12; March 4, 11, 18; April: 15, 29; May 6, 13, 20. Meetings will be held from 2:20-3:30pm in the Nurses Office.

PODCASTING CLUB - This new club will provide a unique opportunity for students to learn the necessary skills to create and publish their very own podcasts about topics that interest them.  All students are welcome to join this club.  Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-24 school year are as follows: October: 3,10,17,24 ; November: 14,21,28 ; December: 12 ; January: 2,9,16,23,29 ; February: 13, 20, 27 ; March: 5, 12.  Meeting times are from 2:20-3:30 and all meetings will be held in the Media Center.

MATH CLUB - Do you like a challenge? If yes, then the math club is for you! Members of the math club will have the opportunity to build their problem solving and math skills. Members will also compete in different math competitions. Students will try out for the math teams that participate in MATHCOUNTS and the CBA Math Tournament. On these teams students will compete against students from other schools across the state (and potentially country!) to test their math skills. An informative meeting will be held after school on Tuesday October 3rd until 3:00. MATHCOUNTS tryouts will be held in December and practices for the team will be in January and February (dates TBD). 

The MATHCOUNTS competition will be held on a Saturday in February. The rounds for the CBA tournament will be held once a month at MMS starting in October with the final round being after school at CBA in February (dates TBD). Math club is open to all grades and levels. If you are interested, then come by the informative meeting to learn more!

PING PONG CLUB - Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-24 school year are as follows: October: 5,12,26; November: 2,16,30 ; December: 14 ; January: 4,11,18,25 ; February: 1,15,22,29 ; March: 7,14,21. Meeting times are from 2:20-3:45 pm. This club meets to have fun, learn ping pong game strategies, and participate in tournaments during each scheduled session. This club is open to all interested students.

RESPONSIBLE ACTIONS & DECISIONS (R.A.D.) - In this after-school club, Responsible Actions and Decisions, students participate in lively, fun activities that explore effective decision-making and strategies of appropriate choice-making. Students explore challenging scenarios, establish guidelines and discuss safe plans of execution for various real life situations that students may find themselves facing. Students will help the advisors decide what topics we should focus on in the club each year. They are also trained to provide peer-to-peer education within the school community, their primary goal being an interactive presentation for 5th grade students. R.A.D. is for all students who want to work on leadership skills and make a positive impact at MMS and our elementary schools and is open to all students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.This club meets after school on Thursday approximately twice a month. Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year will be September 28, October 12 and 26, November 2 and 16, December 14 and 21, January 4 and 18, February 1 and 15, March 7 and 21, April 11 and 25, and May 2 and 9 from 2:30- 3:15 pm (please note: meeting dates are subject to change based on presentation preparation and delivery).

SCHOOL NEWSPAPER CLUB - All students are eligible to join. Students work independently or in groups to write articles on a wide variety of topics--school news, sports, art, world news, television and movies, the internet, and much more. All topic ideas are welcome. We will publish three online editions of our student developed newspaper called "The Hawker." The meeting dates are from 2:30-3:45 and are as follows: 9/28, 10/5, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/16, 11/30, 12/21, 1/4 , 1/18, 2/1, 2/15, 2/22, 3/7, 3/21, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/16, 5/23

SCHOOL MUSICAL - The school musical this year is Beauty and the Beast, jr.  Singing, Acting and Dancing auditions are September 18 and 22. Students must attend both auditions. Callback auditions are September 27 and 28.  Students who are called back will be asked to attend one of those dates. Rehearsals will generally be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-4pm.  Rehearsals begin in early October, culminating with a production held in March.  All students are encouraged to come try out for this exciting activity. We are looking for actors, dancers and singers. The dates of the school musical are Friday, March 8th at 7:00 pm and 2 performances on Saturday, March 9th at 12:00 pm. and 4:00 pm.

SCIENCE CLUB - Science: it's like magic, only real! If you like hand-ons science experiments, this is the right club for you. We will be exploring all different fields of science over the course of the year: CSI Forensics, Chemistry, Animal Science, Environmental Science, and more. Come and explore the science you don't get to do in class!

STUDENT COUNCIL - The Student Council promotes school spirit, plans important events, and spreads kindness throughout the school community! All students of all grades are welcome to participate and represent the student body. Our officers, such as the +president, vice president, treasurer and secretary, are elected by the entire school. Last year, some of the events we coordinated were the Thanksgiving food drive, the Toys for Tots collection, the Valentine’s Day Grams Fundraiser, the Spring Door Decorating Contest and many spirit weeks. If you are someone who wants to make a difference, this is the club for you! We meet from 2:20 to 3:20. Scheduled meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: September 21, 28; October 12, 26; November 16, 30; December 12, 19; January 11, 25; February 15, 29; March 14, 28; April 11, 25; May 9, 22; June 5.

WRITING CLUB - Our writing club brings together students of all writing abilities who have an interest in creating fiction, nonfiction, scripts, poetry, and other creative pieces of work. Our warm and friendly environment provides a collaborative workspace for members to write, share ideas, and provide feedback for each other's work. Our goal is to encourage writers at all levels that their writing voice is worth sharing! You will have opportunities to learn new skills, styles, and tips from famous writers and even your fellow students here at MMS! We meet from 2:20 to 3:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Room 239. Tentative meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows: February 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29; March 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26.

YEARBOOK CLUB - All students are invited to join this club and work on the MMS Yearbook. The only requirements are enthusiasm, ambition, and the desire to work. Students will have an opportunity to learn the Yearbook Avenue Website to create layouts, upload pictures, write captions and edit pages. Additionally, students will help with advertising the yearbook. Students who are artistic and enjoy creative writing are encouraged to join!  Meetings are held from 2:30-3:30 pm in room 311 on the following days: September 19th, September 26th, October 10th, October 17th, October 24th, October 31st, November 14th, November 21st, November 28th, December 12th, December 19th, January 9th, January 16th, January 23rd, January 30th, February 6th, February 13th, February 20th, February 27th, March 5th, March 12th, March 19th

6th GRADE STEM CLUB - The 6th Grade STEM Club gives students the opportunity to explore the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math by completing various hands-on challenges throughout the school year. During weekly club meetings, students will work collaboratively to successfully complete engineering design challenges based on the criteria and constraints given. September 20; October 11, 25; November 1, 15, 29; December 13, 20; January 10, 24; February 7, 14, 21, 28; March 6, 13, 20, 27; April 17 Meetings are from 2:20-3:45 pm in Room 307.

7th & 8th Grade STEM CLUB (TSA) - The STEM Club for grades 7 and 8 runs as a nationally­ recognized chapter of TSA, the Technology Student Association, in which students have the opportunity to submit projects and participate in the NJ Middle School State Conference each spring. During club meetings, students will use problem solving skills to design and create solutions for a wide variety of TSA ­approved projects in preparation for this competition. Please note that there is an additional fee for your child to be registered at the state and national level as a Technology Student Association member (approximately $16 per child).
